What health benefits will you see once you lower your BMI?

what is bmi

What is a BMI? What do the numbers mean? Being overweight or obese is a cause for concern as it can seriously affect a person’s health and quality of life.  Joint pain, breathing issues and energy levels are just a few minor issues which can result from being overweight.

A recent health survey for England reported 28% of adults in England to be obese and a further 36.2% as overweight. (The statistics for Ireland are tracking at very similar numbers).  That’s over 64% of the population, placing the UK near the top of the European leader board for obesity.

So, what do you think ‘obese’ looks like?

In our line-up, draw a line where you think this woman moves from a healthy weight to overweight and another where she moves into the obese category? Answers at the end.

BMI scale

What’s your BMI? Just knowing someone’s weight isn’t enough.

At 100 Kgs:

Someone who is 6’4” (1.9m) is slightly overweight

Someone who is 5’2” (1.57m) is classed as morbidly obese

Body mass index (BMI) uses your height and your weight to work out if you are a healthy weight or not.

We know that most people understand what ‘healthy eating’ is.  Most know that lettuce is termed a ‘good’ food and chips are a ‘bad’ food.  Why when we have the information to enable us to lose weight, do we behave in a way that prevents weight loss.

The answer is not on a plate, in a fridge or in your mouth – the answer is in your head.

LighterLife support all clients with CBT Mindfulness sessions developed to help people change their mindset around food. Do what you’ve always done, and you’ll get what you’ve always had. Understanding your “why” is one of your keys to change and knowing your “how to change” is another.
